This class will focus on ways to use 5 of the tools in interesting ways that support student learning or connecting with colleagues. Carrie Delcourt and Viola Bain will draw on their experience with these tools while teaching the rest of us! Each session will be hands-on, allowing time for practice and will provide templates and tips for using them for your own applications.

Preventing Sexual Harassment (PSH)
Online
All employees must complete PSH training annually. This online course provides information about EEO laws related to sexual harassment and other types of harassment. Participants will complete a mastery test at the end of the training. Access the training through myBlackHawk, Employees tab, Institutional Training channel, Preventing Sexual Harassment link. This training may be accessed at any time as needed for review.
New employees: Complete within first 2 months of employment.
Other employees: Complete annually in October.

Coaching Performance

One of the most critical skills of the supervisor is the ability to help employees improve their performance through coaching. Participants in this course will learn how to create an environment that supports high performance and identify situations that indicate a need for performance coaching. Supervisors will learn an effective process for conducting and documenting coaching sessions and following up for success. Coaching Performance is a core course in the QCPDN Professional Supervisor Certificate Program.

FERPA Training
Learn about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and be prepared to respond appropriately to requests for student information. Access the training through myBlackHawk, Employees tab, Institutional Training channel, FERPA link.
New Employees: Complete within two months of employment.
All employees must complete FERPA training one time. Further training will not be required unless a change in the law necessitates further training.

The final summer learning opportunity for the WebCT upgrade, called CE8, will be held in August. These two days are identical, so you may choose one or the other. Course Materials: Issues of Critical Importance

Two critical issues surrounding your course materials are worth reviewing…making them accessible to people with disabilities (or even undiagnosed conditions) and complying with copyright law when sharing them in class or online. Training will be available during the summer for faculty starting with WebCT8 in the fall.

- Orientation to Black Hawk College - QC Sites
This three-session course is designed to orient the new employee to Black Hawk College. Topics covered include an overview of the College, BHC vision, mission, values, and goals, the BHC student, internal communication, performance appraisal, crisis intervention, safety, and security, and a reception with the President’s Cabinet. Sessions are scheduled monthly in different campus locations to afford an opportunity to tour most campus sites, and participants can join at any session. Travel is arranged and paid for by the Manager of Training.

- Supervisor Development - Human Resources Module
This four-module course provides participants with information and skill development specific to the supervisor function at Black Hawk College. Modules are presented by internal experts from the BHC Finance, Human Resources, ITS, and Planning & Institutional Effectiveness Departments. Supervisors will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on practice related to their various day to day responsibilities. BHC Finance 101 is a prerequisite to BHC Finance 102. Otherwise, participants can join at any session.

- Clickers in the Classroom

Clickers are hand-held remote control-like devices that can be used for polling and
anonymous quizzing during face-to-face, live classes. During this tip session, Nancy
Smith (Sociology) will demo how and for what the clickers can be used in class, how the
students acquire them, and how the instructor displays the composite results for the
entire class to see. Handout provided.

key sources of good ones for your classes and learn about the Creative Commons license
for using them.

Individual podcasts are available (learn how to find them), but also, many podcasts are
published on a recurring basis. This session will focus on where to find interesting
podcasts by topic and by free subscription, as well as how to access or download them
for use in your classes or your own professional development.

Triumphs and Terrors of Putting a Course Online
A unique 4-week, online class for faculty new to creating or revising courses for online
delivery. As our online degree launches and more classes are being developed in key areas of
the AA/AS curriculum, this learning opportunity can be especially valuable for those of you
venturing into online course design for the first time. Enrollment is limited. Course content
will focus on BHC resources for online course development, best practices as applied in current
online classes, and a design project for the first couple of weeks of your own online class.
1 credit hour/quality point. $100 stipend. Dorothy Beck, instructor.
Online class begins March 17, following spring break, and concludes April 11.

Do you subscribe to a listserv, get frequent mail from one person or from many students
with myBH email addresses? Would you like Outlook to filter them so that all of these
messages go into their own folder for easier access later? This session will show you
how to set up a filter in Outlook.

Did you know that the TLC has a scanner you can use? It is great for scanning in an
image or photo from your textbook, to put into PowerPoint slides or handouts. It is also
great for scanning in a document that you picked up at a conference and you’d like an
electronic, editable copy of it. This session will show you the very easy steps for
scanning either type of piece.

series is for you. Last month, we began with best practices for hybrid
learning environments in a nutshell, focusing on face-to-face/online hybrid
options. If you missed it and would like to join the series, please contact

“published” this semester so you can access it from your home or office.
- Hybrid Teaching: What’s New and Is it for You?

Thinking about developing a hybrid course, now that the Senates have determined a
definition and process? OR thinking about developing a hybrid option for students to
complete your department’s certificate or degree program? This session will review
what is known about best practices for hybrid learning environments in a nutshell.
Interested faculty will determine a date for a more in-depth, hands-on workshop when
they can work with their own course materials later in the semester.
