Theme for Lunch and Learn: Classroom Policies on Syllabi.

All of our syllabi contain policies that we believe establish a climate for learning in and out of the classroom. The purpose of this Lunch & Learn is to discuss the variety of options we all have considered or are using for two of them: attendance and grading policies.  Amy Kolker will moderate a discussion on attendance policies and Paula Luft will moderate one on grading policies.  Bring your experiences and questions as we learn from each other!

Please note:  The purpose of the Lunch and Learn is to share ideas, discuss the purpose and necessity of having any policy at all on syllabi, and discover how specific policies we have adopted are contributing to a positive learning environment for our students.  The purpose is not to imply a correct policy, but to encourage sharing and exploration of the variety of policies we use.  We can enhance our own professional development by learning from each other.

Web 2.0 technologies help you create a dynamic, interactive, read/write learning environment with your students. Many of the Web 2.0 tools (FREE SOFTWARE) can change the way students interact with their teacher, their learning colleagues, and the course content and supplement or enrich the technology applications you already use. These tools can be used for one particular lecture or throughout your courses. EVEN A TECH NOVICE CAN USE THESE TOOLS! In this session we’ll see how Web 2.0 tools are changing the 21st Century classroom. A hot tech topic in plain teacher talk! Susan Philhower, new staff person in the T/LC, has extensive experience using these tools in her college teaching. Join us!

Bring your questions, ideas, and wish list for using myBlackHawk. Hear how others are using it for their classes, committees, and keeping up-to-date on college information. Maybe you have a question about communicating with individual BHC employees, committee members, or students. Or, did you know you can store documents that people in a group can use, such as members of a student club or a course? In what ways can you make it easier to use myBlackHawk? How about how to use it as an instructional tool? How do I get info on one of my current students and what info is that? In other words, bring your questions or learn from others!

Lunch and Learn Theme: Designing and Improving Tests/Quizzes

Even with the proliferation of assessment options, objective tests may still be the most appropriate method for assessing learning in many classes. As you anticipate constructing exams and quizzes, it seems like an ideal time to review what the testing experts can teach us about how to plan a good test, how to write or select good items, how to measure higher-order thinking skills, and how to use item analysis to improve your test questions. If you can, bring a question or two that you have had to “throw out” in the past for us to examine together.
      Appointments available throughout the day.
