| I get to have the best of both worlds in the Teaching/Learning Center! Of course that is Teaching and Learning. I should have realized it in my Introduction to Computers class in high school that I really enjoy working with computers. Instead of focusing on computers in college (before BHC), I earned a BA in Education. I've taught 4th grade, was a computer instructor at another college, and have been assisting BHC faculty with teaching on the Web since 2002. You too can have the best of both worlds; come visit us often in the Teaching/Learning Center! |

| I have taught mathematics at Black Hawk College for over 25 years. I have discovered that learning how to teach effectively is an ongoing process. The TLCs’ mission is to assist in that endeavor for all faculty. Teaching methods and tools do change over time, which can be exciting as well as a challenge for all of us to keep current! There was a time, for example, when there were no calculators and no Internet available to math students. Today, we use graphics calculators, Web-based resources, and new approaches to math instruction. The T/LCs are here to support all faculty in their efforts to keep up to date and enhance student learning in new ways. I look forward to supporting the faculty at East Campus, especially!

I have been working at the T/LC for almost a semester now, and it is great! The staff is wonderful and the environment is even better! I have learned quite a bit since I've started working here, and I am looking forward to learning much more. Thankfully, the T/LC has asked me to come back and work again next semester, and I hope that I can keep working here until graduation.

Student Interns
Each semester, the T/LC provides learning opportunities for talented BHC students. During the spring semester of ’05, Phil Cathior (dual enrollment video production) and Lindsey Joens (Web site design) contributed in wonderful, creative ways to projects and critical services provided by the T/LC to its faculty and staff constituents. Each had opportunities to practice applying their classroom learning to real-world projects and we learned from them too!
Meet the other interns who have been a part of the T/LC team below

I’m currently enrolled at Black Hawk to earn a Web Development Certificate. I’ll be working with the TLC for the Fall 2009 semester helping them achieve their goal of a web site that is accessible, up-to-date, with a fresh new look. I’m eager for the challenge, and grateful for the opportunity to develop my skills, and gain experience. What a fantastic group of people to work with! |

As I complete my last semester of the Web Programming Program at Black Hawk College, I would like to use my ability to making the T/LC an up to date website that can be interactive with the users. I also hope that the internship will give me more knowledge and experience to continue on when I transfer to WIU for the Board of Trustee program.

Lori Owens
Web Programming Intern
|
|
With my major in Web Programming, my goal
for this fall semester is to help the T/LC team begin to develop
a more interactive and accessible Web site. I am really looking
forward to the experience. Come spring, I will be transferring
to St. Ambrose University where I plan on earning my Bachelor’s
degree in Computer Science. From there I would like to freelance
in the Web programming field; thereby, enabling me to broaden my
work in children’s ministry.

Jon Pearsall
Internet Radio Broadcasting Intern

I had fun developing the web radio for the T/LC. I took it from just
a concept to actually being able to send out live shows. The staff
were very helpful and I hope to come back next fall.

Matt Oliva
Web Programming Intern
|

Working here this semester has taught me a great deal about
programming in real world situations. The different concepts
we developed helped me build and refine my growing skills.
I found the people here to be great to work with and hope I
will have the privilege of working with such people in the future.

Erin Dawson
Graphics and Web Design Intern
from Western Illinois University
|
| The semester I spent working at the
Teaching/Learning Center was so...easy! "Easy" meaning
the staff is great to work with and are always helpful with any
situation. The experience I got while working here helped me to
realize that I want to go into web design as a career instead
of graphic design in general. If you're interested in doing an
internship and have some graphic design skills, this is a great
office to display and explore your talent. |
