History of Teaching/Learning Center at BHC
Getting Started
Following Board of Trustee approval, the newly created Teaching/Learning Center began operations from the office of its first director, natural science professor Dorothy Martin in the spring of 1992. By that fall, Suzanne Pitz (an Outreach staff member) joined Dorothy as her assistant and they worked together through the fall of 1994, determining needs and sponsoring events such as part-time faculty orientation and workshops, faculty colloquia on pedagogically related topics, etc. They also began publishing a newsletter and coordinating the use of instructional technology on campus (BHC Self-study Report, 1992-3, p. 52-3). East Campus established its own T/LC services in the fall of 1993 with Verne Weidler as its first director.
New Facilities and T/LC Team Expansion
QC Campus
In the fall of 1994, Phil Johnson joined Dorothy Martin as co-director and the T/LC moved into its first facility, the newly renovated library balcony area. Offices, a learning computer lab, and a conference area expanded the T/LC’s ability to provide faculty with varied learning opportunities. In the fall of 1995, Art Pitz replaced Dorothy Martin as co-director when she moved on to become assistant department chair. Drs. Pitz and Johnson co-directed the QC T/LC until the fall of 1996 when Trudy Watson took the baton. Trudy held the position until 1997 when Suzanne Pitz took the helm, retiring in 2001. Suzanne and Donna Schaad (2001-2003), were both active in getting the Illinois Virtual Campus and ILCCO launched state wide as online learning accelerated. During this period Kathy Ebert and Andy Olson were hired as part of the Web Support Team and Gina Howell split a position between the TLC and Student Learning/Assessment. Donna relocated in 2003. Molly Baker, the current director, began her tenure in September of 2004.
East Campus
By the fall of 1995, Verne Weidler passed on the directorship to Paula (Lee) Lutz, who helped establish the new T/LC facility (summer of ’96). It was located across from the Learning Resource Center and held resource materials, work space for adjuncts, and equipment for checkout. Paula coordinated T/LC services at East Campus until the fall of 1999, when Amy Kolker began her 4-year tenure. Jodee Werkheiser accepted the job in the fall of 2003 and served through the 2004-2005 academic year. Currently, Carla Hillman assesses faculty needs and provides T/LC services on the East Campus. T/LC support staff from the QC Campus has also supplemented services at the East Campus by providing technology support, training, and faculty professional development opportunities on a regular basis.
T/LC Mission/Purpose
Since its beginning, the T/LC has served as the primary support system for faculty learning at BHC. Faculty development on many aspects of effective teaching has always taken the lead, but as instructional technology, distance learning (interactive television), online learning, and student learning/assessment initiatives have become key growth areas of the college, the T/LC has provided leadership, training and support to strengthen the new ventures. Significant state grant funding was also received during the nineties to expand technology acquisition and delivery of distance courses, which directly impacted the ongoing need for professional development of faculty through the T/LC. The T/LC team continues to offer a wide variety of services and learning opportunities to support and inspire faculty innovations that promote student learning. |
