Prerequisites: Phys 201 or permission of the instructor.

Meeting Times: GE 201 meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from
10:00 – 10:50.

Purpose: This course is intended for engineering majors.

Textbook: Beer and Johnston, Vector Mechanics for Engineers, 6th Ed.

Evaluation: Your grade will be determined using a weighted average of the various components of the course. The weights are assigned as follows:

Homework 40%

Quizzes 15%

Midterm 15%

Final Exam 30%

Your grade will be determined from the final percentage as shown below:

A ³ 90

B 80 – 90

C 70 – 80

D 60 – 70

F < 60

If necessary, the cutoffs for the various grades may be lowered, but they will not be raised. For example, I may move the cutoff for C down to 68% if that makes sense. I will not, however, raise the cutoff to 71%. Everyone can get an A if you do well!

Policies:

As with all endeavors, learning requires practice. Homework problems provide practice in applying the concepts and needed reasoning. You are strongly encouraged to attempt as many problems at the end of each chapter as you can. I will assign homework, but do not assume that quizzes and exams will be restricted to problems that are assigned. You are responsible to understand all the material covered in class. Note that the answers to many problems are found in the back of the book. This will allow you to check yourself. If you find that you do not know how to solve a problem or if you want to check your answer to a problem without an answer in the back of the book, please ask the instructor. He will be happy to go over them with you.

Homework will be assigned throughout the term. I will generally assign between four and six problems each week. All homework is due on the Monday of the week after it is assigned. I will choose one problem to grade on each assignment. You will also receive credit for completing the ungraded portions of the assignment. If any material is unclear, get help. I am available during office hours as well as by appointment if needed.

Homework is to be turned in at the start of class on the due date. Late work may be turned in for half credit up to a week after the due date. Past that time, no credit will be given. If you can not get to class to turn in an assignment or report, call me as soon as you can to make arrangements. Note that Black Hawk College policy allows me to drop anyone who misses four or more classes.

At the end of class each Friday, there will be a quiz. They will generally cover material up to what we covered the previous Friday. Your lowest quiz will be dropped before computing your final grade.
