Welcome to the Learning Resources Center (LRC). Our collection includes over 16,000 books and almost 150 periodicals. We also subscribe to a dozen newspapers and have access to online databases many which are full-text. The LRC has 6 public access Internet computers for students, staff, and faculty. The LRC’s library catalog is available outside the library via the Internet at http://carlweb.alsrsa.org:2000/ and BHC Libraries’ electronic resources at http://www.bhc.edu/academics/Library/subject.htm. The LRC is a member of the Alliance Library System (ALS) and LRC users have access to materials available in other ALS library collections. In addition, students, faculty, and staff can request materials from the BHC Quad City Campus Library. Purpose
& Goals--The purpose of
Black Hawk College Libraries is to support the mission and goals of the
College; to enhance the academic experience of its students; and to serve
as a resource for the employees and the community. The goals are to:
Who may use the LRC? Current BHC students, faculty and staff may apply for a library card at the Circulation Desk. Library cards must be renewed each fall. The replacement fee for a lost library card is $1.00. If your card is lost, please notify the LRC immediately. In addition, anyone 16 years of age or older with a valid library card from an ALS full member Library may borrow materials from the LRC. How long can borrowed materials be kept? Most books are loaned for 2 weeks. Reserve items are placed on reserve by faculty for their classes for overnight checkout or in library use only. Reference and Periodicals are to be used IN the library only. Except for Reserve items, books may be renewed if no one else has requested them. Please return borrowed materials promptly so that others may use them. Where is the best place to read and study? There is a reading area for current newspapers and periodicals near the Circulation Desk; study carrels and tables are located throughout the LRC. Interlibrary Loan (ILL)--Students, faculty, and staff may request items on interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan service expands the resources available to students and faculty at Black Hawk College. We can request books and photocopies of periodical articles for no cost from any Alliance Library System member as well as any River Bend Library system member. Books less than 6 months from the publication date cannot be requested through ILL. Materials requested from out-of-system or out-of-state libraries may require a deposit.
Library System Membership--Black Hawk College East Campus is a member of the Alliance Library System (ALS). Illinois is divided into twelve regional library systems and are funded by the state through annual appropriations. ALS is a partnership of nearly 300 academic, public, school district, and special/corporate library members, working together to strengthen resource sharing, library development and to provide continuing education/training. The Resource Sharing Alliance (RSA) is the Local Library System Automation Program (LLSAP) and provides the library catalog for Black Hawk College, East Campus and the ALS Periodicals Union List. |
